So the following comes from this months newsletter of
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
So SEMA scored a big win here, but why does it matter to us, the enthusiasts? Simply put, we don’t need to be a wrenchers to get a “replica” of sports car. While you could always kind of skirt this law and hire a shop to finish your “kit car”. Now it will be legal to get a “manufacture” to build one to a higher standard. Whether this means we will see new small assembly line, Low volume manufacturing, or a lot of hand built high quality replicas coming out way, it should be interesting to see.
It should be interesting to see what companies like Factory Five do in response to this.
I did reach out to Factory Five, I hope to do a podcast interview with them soon in regards to this ruling.

The bit at the end about meeting year of manufacture emission standards will represent a serious issue though.

Superperformance already announced that it plans on taking advantage of this change in the law to build cars! http://www.superformance.com/news_view.aspx…

Well as I read it, you could take a 5.0 from a current gen mustang and put it in something and comply. It maybe more difficult if you’re building a retro style engine as well in the car.

Beyond the engine itself to be fully compliant you need the whole OBD2 system.
So currently you cannot put a big block ford in your cobra replica.

To me I think sakes for ford 5.0 kits as well as Chevys E-Rod packages are gonna jump.
I agree it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Really the last semi successful attempt was the Shay replicas of Model A fords in the 70s. At that time they had to meet emissions of the time but bring small volume were exempt from crash safety.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

Cool! Now I can start building replicas of the 1986 Vanagon Westfalia, probably using current Subaru engines. Maybe I can undercut those guys charging 6 figures for nicely restored ones.
